Estate Planning for Mature Families
Estate Planning for Mature Families:
Making Things Easier for Your Loved Ones
At the Raegan Thorp Real Estate Group, we’ve spent the past few weeks diving into the importance of estate planning with Brian Douglas, an attorney who works closely with families on these decisions. In week one, we covered the basics. In week two, we focused on younger families. And now, in our final week of the series, we’re turning our attention to mature families who are thinking about legacy, easing burdens, and planning for the future.
Estate planning isn’t just about dividing assets. It’s about creating clarity and peace of mind—for you and your family.
Why Planning Matters So Much
Many of us have been through the process of caring for parents or loved ones and know just how overwhelming it can be. One client recently told me, “I don’t want to be a burden on my daughter. I want everything to be as easy as possible.”
That’s exactly where thoughtful planning comes in. Estate planning allows you to define your wishes clearly:
Who will handle what after you’re gone
How your property and assets should be managed
Who you trust most to carry out your wishes
And the best part? You get to decide the rules. As Brian explained, “It’s your wishes, your desires, your rules. As long as it’s legal, we can incorporate it into your plan.”
Will-Based vs. Trust-Based Planning
When it comes to structuring your estate, you generally have two options:
Will-Based Planning: A common approach, but it often requires going through probate—a lengthy and sometimes costly court process that can take months (or even longer).
Trust-Based Planning: Think of this as creating a “container” for your assets. You transfer ownership of your assets into the trust while you’re alive. You still control everything, but if something happens to you, the transition to the next trustee is seamless. By doing this, you avoid probate altogether.
For many families, especially as they acquire more assets or approach retirement, a trust can provide the smoothest, most efficient path forward.
Defining Your Legacy
One of the most powerful aspects of estate planning is the ability to define your legacy. Maybe you’ve raised your kids, paid for college, or supported them in other ways. Now, you may want to focus on leaving something for your grandchildren—or even for causes that matter deeply to you.
As Brian shared, “This is where it can get fun. You’re in control. You get to create the rules and ensure your wishes are carried out exactly how you envision.”
Peace of Mind (Without the Pain)
Let’s be honest: most of us put off estate planning. It can feel overwhelming, complicated, or like something we’ll “get to later.” But as with most important things in life, putting it off only leaves the worry lingering in the back of your mind.
The truth? It doesn’t have to be painful. As Brian joked, “It’s not like going to the dentist—there are no shots.” Taking the time now to plan provides lasting peace of mind for you and makes things infinitely easier for your loved ones down the road.
