What Should You Know About Estate Planning

This week, I had the chance to sit down with Brian Douglas—someone I’ve worked with on many real estate transactions. While most of you know Brian as an attorney who helps navigate real estate closings, what you may not know is that he’s also an expert in estate planning and probate. It’s not the most glamorous topic (kind of like going to the dentist, as Brian says!), but it’s an important one. Whether you’re just starting out, raising a family, or already an empty nester, everyone needs an estate plan.

Why Estate Planning Is So Important

According to Brian, no matter your stage of life, if you don’t have a plan in place and something happens (and unfortunately, life happens), it can quickly turn into a big, stressful mess.

Without the proper documents, families often find themselves stuck in probate. That means everything—bank accounts, property, and assets—are frozen until the court gives permission to move forward. This process can take three months to over a year, depending on the county.

In the meantime, mortgages, utilities, and other expenses still need to be paid. Many families aren’t prepared to shoulder that financial burden, and in worst-case scenarios, properties can even face foreclosure.

Businesses plan for unexpected changes in leadership all the time, Brian explained. Families should do the same—ensuring continuity and stability, rather than scrambling in the middle of grief.

What Does Estate Planning Cost?

One of the biggest questions people have is cost.

Brian shared that basic estate planning starts at around $950. While more complex estates (especially those involving multiple properties or businesses) can run much higher, most families can have peace of mind for under $1,000.

As Brian put it: “If we do the planning up front, you’ll know the price. If you don’t plan and something happens later, you can usually add a zero to that number.”

In other words, being proactive is always cheaper—and far less stressful—than being reactive.

Take the Next Step

Estate planning might not be on your weekend fun list, but it’s one of the greatest gifts you can give your family. It protects your loved ones, your property, and your peace of mind.
